From the Horse’s Mouth: Why EML?

Uncategorized

Among the plethora of the student organized bodies in the institute is the lecture series organized by the Extra Mural Lectures team.  The EML team facilitates a diverse set of lectures in the institute, with the goal of providing students with lectures specific to their interests as well as providing them with an exposure that lives up to the established standard of the institute. Some of the notable lectures the EML team has organized in the past include His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Viswanathan Anand, Rajamouli.

The Team Structure

The EML team works under the Student’s General Secretary. It is headed by 3 Cores, who report to the SGS directly. Under the cores work 5 Strategists, each assigned to a different vertical. The coordinators, who are one level of subordination lower, work for all the verticals. This helps them gain the relevant exposure to carry the team forward in future years.

The Type of Work

There are 5 different verticals of the EML team, namely:

  • Logistics – Handles logistics like venue fixing, travel requirements, etc
  • Design and Media – Synthesizes creative content to be used by the Publicity team
  • Finance – Takes care of the allocated budget, settling of the bills and other…
  • Omnibus – A lecture series providing institute professors platforms to give lectures outside campus.
  • Publicity – Ensures visibility and awareness of the event

EML This Year

The EML Cores this year are GL Sai Kiran, Arjun Prasannan and Mehul Chaudhary. The EML team this year has worked diligently to bring speakers associated with current events, under themes like A.S. Kiran Kumar  (ISRO director) for the Dr. Abdul Kalam Memorial Lecture and P Chidambaram under the banner of 25 Years of Reform. The EML team this year has also adopted an environment friendly Publicity approach by scrapping Vinyl banners and still achieving higher levels of publicity than before by expanding social media outreach.

Perks

Selfies with celebrities, personal interactions over high tea, initiating and maintaining contacts with the who’s who in sports, cinema, politics, business etc are few of the perks of working with the EML team. Experience working directly with and maintaining a good rapport with the institute administration comes as an adding benefit with this PoR.

The Application Procedure

The EML core applications are sent out by the Student’s General Secretary  (this year, GL Sai Kiran). The Cores are interviewed by the SGS and are selected based on their applications and interviews. The Cores send out the Strategist and Coordinator applications, and consequently select the team. An aspiring coordinator must have talked to all of the current team members to understand the functioning of the team. This is essential for a well rounded application. It is recommended that all EML aspirants have a clear understanding of current affairs, as it is imperative that the speakers brought in are relevant in the context of current happenings.
