In what is a heartening news for the IIT Madras community, our institute has been ranked as the best engineering institute by the MHRD’s National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF). IIT Madras was at the top of the engineering table with an average score of 89.42, followed by IIT Bombay, Kharagpur, Delhi and Kanpur in first five places. The entire table can be found here

NIRF, set up last year, aims to rank educational institutions in the country on several parameters – namely, Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception. To aid in ranking, the institutions were asked to give data on various fronts for the period of three years between 2012 and 2015. Data for IIT Madras can be found here

While cumulatively, IIT Madras leads the rankings, these are the further rank split-ups across parameters.

Teaching, Learning and Resources 2
Research and Professional Practices 2
Graduation Outcomes 5
Outreach and Inclusivity 1
Perception 4

A more detailed explanation of the NIRF metric and how different colleges fared can be found on this flipbook released by MHRD.

In a note to the press, Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said “The top rank is a reflection of the commitment of the faculty, staff and students of IIT Madras towards fulfilling the objectives of the Strategic Plan 2020 that we have set for ourselves”,

He added that, “ The IIT Madras Strategic Plan spells out quantified targets for all key pillars of the Institute. These include a flexible curriculum suited to the aspirations of today’s youth, quality faculty, a thriving research programme with a critical mass of research scholars and laboratories with the latest equipment, India’s strongest industry-academia collaboration epitomised by the country’s first university-based Research Park, an effervescent start-up ecosystem with nearly a hundred companies being currently incubated, a rapidly expanding programme of collaborations and student exchanges with leading global universities, and an enviable placement record.”

In addition, the institute prides itself in its outreach to the community at large. The institute has developed key technologies to address grand challenges faced by the country in water, energy, healthcare, housing and the like.”, said Prof. Bhaskar
