120px-BasketballThe Gerald Fisher &Kokila Rani(GF&KR) tournament, one of Chennai’s premier basket ball tournaments, is presented by IITM every year. The tournament has a budget of 2.5 lacs, and takes place usually in January, but this time, due to certain technical issues, it happened from 22-26 February.

The tournament happens in knock out-league format. This year, in the Men’s tournament, 12 teams participated. The knock-out matches were held on February 22 and 23, and of the 12 teams, 4 teams qualified for the league matches. Along with IITM, Satyabama University, Hindustan University, and Hindustan College of Arts and Sciences were the qualified teams. As there were only four teams registered for Women’s tournament, which were from IITM, MOP vaishnav college, Jeppiar College and Stella Maris, only the league matches were held.

On 24th and 25th February 2012, the league matches were held and Hindustan University and Satyabama Univeristy emerged as the League winners defeating IITM and Hindustan College of Arts and Sciences in Men’s Tournament. In the Women’s tournament, MOP Vaishnav and Jeppiar College were the league winners.

The finals and the loser’s finals were conducted on February 26, 2012, Sunday. When MOP Vaishnav raised the trophy in Women’s tournament, Hindustan University emerged victorious over Satyabama University in Men’s tournament. In the nail biting loser’s finals of both categories, IITM couldn’t defeat the opponents. The third place in the Men’s tournament was taken by Hindustan College of Arts and Science and Stella Maris grabbed the third place in Women’s.

Prakruti Gogia of first year Electrical Engineering brought pride to IITM with the title of most promising young player and Vishnu of First year Ocean Engineering won the Best Player (men) title. Most Valuable Player of the tournament was Naveen of Hindustan College of Arts and Sciences. The top scorer of the tournament was Vignesh from Satyabama University.

Dean (Students) L.S.Ganesh, distributed the prizes in the closing ceremony, which was attended by Institute Sports Secretary Siva Teja. Prof. Ganesh announced that the GF&KR basket ball tournament will be conducted in OAT from next year. The sports advisor K.P.Sudheer was also present in the ceremony.
