This year’s Athletics Schroeter started with the 100 metres girls race in the Institute Stadium on 27th February. Even before the commencement of the race, the stadium was packed with people who had come for an evening walk, and NSO volunteers.

The Athletic Schroeter as such was well organized and the events were completed in 6 days (27 February to March 4 with the exception of March 3 on account of the soapbox). First years participated in most of the events. In addition to that, the level of participation and the quality of performance had improved, added the Athletics Captain Prem Kumar.

The six days of Athletics Schroeter also showed sportsman spirit among IIT-ians. Though most of the athletes were injured, none of them were ready to give up and gave their best effort inspite of the pain. Other than the Inter IIT athletes, only a few others participated from Sharav.

The race to the “Best Athlete” was between Mithun Joy Cherayil(Tapti) and Teacher(Mandak) and after the nail biting 400m hurdles, Mithun Joy Cherayil brought the bacon home with 1 gold, 4 silvers and 1 bronze medal. Rohit ( Alakananda), amused the spectators as he grabbed the gold in the Long Jump and High Jump events. In the words of the present sports secretary Teacher, the promising performances of Mithun Joy Cherayil, Praveen ( 2 gold,1 silver,1 bronze) and Rohit are an added advantage in the upcoming Inter IIT Sports Meet in Roorkee. In women’s, Joola Vasavi of Biotechnology, became the Best Athlete with 1 gold and 1silver. Mandak became overall champions with 50 points and Tapti came second with 47 points. Ganga(27 points) and Alak(22 points) came in third and fourth places respectively.

The medals will be distributed on Institute Gymkhana Day due on the second week of April.
