Freshie Guide: Welcome Home!

Well, hello there, new blood! Here you are. Finally. After so long, all that work bears fruit and here you sit, reading this article (think of it as an initiation ceremony) . Proud of yourself? No? Yes? Whatever your answer, you should be. Cracking such an exam and landing yourself such a coveted seat is no mean feat. Congratulations! You’re officially one of the smartest people in the country.

Now that we’ve got the congratulations out of the way, let’s start with introducing you to your new home. Yes, home. Because no matter what happens, what you go through here, you will very soon embrace this institute as your “home away from home” (tired of hearing this phrase yet?).

We’d be very disappointed if any of you aren’t wondering what exactly you’ve got yourselves into. You have a right to expect as much from this institute as it expected from you before letting you in here. And we’re proud to say, it lives up to all the hype surrounding the “IIT” tag. And not just academically, fellas! IITians are nothing like the nerds you’ve probably been led to believe they are! In fact, your coaching centers were probably more “nerdy” than this. A good college is like opening a door to the entire world without having to step outside. And IIT Madras is, in this respect, one of the best.

The best minds (yes, best, haven’t you seen the NIRF rankings?) in the country all come together giving you an impressively unique “brotherhood” of fellow students, excelling everywhere from sports to music to academics, so no matter where your interests lie, you never feel left out, never alone. You can come in fresh and dive into insti life without missing a beat. No matter what you do, there are always people to help you. No matter what mistake you make, there are people who’ve made it before. No matter where you come from, you belong here.

Everyone knows that the IIT’s are the best place to receive your education in India. We have world –class faculty, state-of-the-art labs and research equipment, an impressive pool of placement companies, blah, blah, blah, so on. But this begs the question, are academics all IIT is good for? Surely maintaining such a high quality of education requires a compromise on extra-curricular activities? Not at all. IIT Madras asks you to compromise on nothing. You’ve sacrificed enough of your life to get in here, you deserve to have fun!

Are you a Sports bum? We offer quality equipment, courts, stadiums, anything you need, even top class training. Is this all? Hardly. The most important thing we offer is competition. Good, healthy competition to keep you on your toes and looking to improve. You’ll love it.

Do words hold a special place in your heart? Does quizzing? Do dancing and music fill you with a joy like no other? The numerous clubs at IIT Madras give you all of these, and more.

Feel like your ideas never get the credit they deserve? Your ingenuity never has the encouragement it needs? Look no further than the CFI, for all your creative needs.

Haven’t attended your fair share of parties and festivals? Saarang will leave you spellbound and gleefully anticipating its return.

Think your innovation and tech skills need a stage? Shaastra is your way to go.

Are you a Foodie? The eateries around insti will set your tummy a-rumbling.

All of this IIT Madras gives you. All of this, and in return, all you need to do is: be yourself. That’s right. Neither we, nor the institute expect anything from your side, besides a plea to not waste the brilliance that brought you all together here. Because, of course, giving a person space to work and experiment as he sees fit is the only way to bring out the best in them, and IIT Madras offers you full creative freedom.

My French Fries. You get the idea. And never forget Cotton Candy. I love Cotton Candy. Besides these, I play Tennis and capitalize my words (it's addictive) regularly.
